The defending champions looked more aggressive in the first half an hour and tried to break the Chelsea resilience through Sane and Sterling. However, the finishing touch eluded for a long time. The best opportunity came after the half-hour mark when Sterling fed Sane a delicious ball in the box. The German took a nice shot that got blocked by Chelsea captain Azpilicueta. And then, against the run of the game, the hosts got the lead right before halftime.
Following a well-organized attack, Hazard worked his way inside the City box and then laid the ball on to the path of an onrushing Kante. The former Leicester City man then took a thundering strike that was brilliant enough to beat Ederson. With that strike, Chelsea vs Manchester City scoreline read 1-0 at the break.
Chelsea looked to build up from their goal in the first half and started attacking in a spirited fashion right after the break. The visitors also managed to test Kepa on a couple of occasions, but luck was not in their favour. Instead, Luiz found the net for the hosts with only above ten minutes to go. The City fans will blame the referee for the decision regarding the corner, but in the end, it was a good spot by the referee. Then, a good setpiece by Hazard was met by the Brazilian defender and he headed intelligently to the goal. Ederson was stranded to the spot and it was 2-0 for the Blues.
Sterling and co kept pushing for a comeback after the Luiz goal. But, Guardiola’s men fell short on every occasion and the final scoreline of Chelsea vs Manchester City remained 2-0. Thanks to this victory, Maurizio Sarri’s boys moved to the third spot on the league table, while the current champions dropped to the second.
