The Merseyside derby at Anfield had weirdest of endings as Liverpool grabbed a crazy win in closing moments.


Derby day in Premier League was already eventful when Liverpool and Everton, the Merseyside rivals locked horns at Anfield. The Reds, chasing title glory, maintained an unbeaten streak so far in the league but suffered their third successive Champions League defeat on the road following a 2-1 surrender against Paris St-Germain this midweek.

In-form Everton were tipped to threaten Liverpool and they did not disappoint Liverpool, the hosts started the game brightly but struggled to break the defensive resilience of Marco Silva’s men. Sadio Mane failed to finish one-on-one whereas Xherdan Shaqiri was denied by Jordan Pickford from a close range. Everton, at the other end, had a couple of glorious opportunities when Andre Gomes almost broke the deadlock. He was first denied by Alisson from two yards out and the rebound was cleared off the line by Joe Gomez. The first-half ended scorelessly.

Liverpool kept on disappointing in the second half as Mane once again failed to finish his chances. Firmino misplaced many passes in the final third whereas Salah was well-contained by the Toffees centre-backs. But who though the would be having the most fascinating ending when a goalkeeping howler from Pickford allowed the Reds to score a winner in closing seconds. Divock Origi, the forgotten Liverpool forward, added the most crucial goal to stretch his scoring record in Merseyside derby and ensured all three points scripting a bizarre win.
