Liverpool, despite a massive disappointment in Belgrade, were favourites to register a comprehensive victory at Anfield against bottom-placed Fulham in their Premier League early kickoff fixture on Sunday lunchtime. The Cottagers were lined up defensively to salvage a point from this tricky away tie but were unlucky to suffer a 2-0 defeat despite their best efforts to shut down the misfiring Liverpool attack.
The Reds started the game lively but once again lacked composure upfront with Fulham kept on defending deep with discipline and resilience. A few opportunities were wasted whereas Sergio Rico did extremely well to deny Mohamed Salah twice. The visitors, too, came close to score but teenager Ryan Sessegnon failed to keep his effort on target and the breakthrough occurred dramatically seconds later Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal was ruled out for being offside. It was a tight call but the assistant referee got it right and the counter move from the resulting free-kick saw Salah beating past the out of position Cottagers’ backline with his pace followed by a composed finish.
Liverpool, meanwhile, were more authoritative after the break and had full control over their 1-0 lead. However, an insurance goal was needed and it did not take long to double the margin when Xherdan Shaqiri finished with great efficiency picking up an emphatic cross from Andrew Robertson. Rico pulled off a few more saves to avoid further humiliation and the Merseysiders had a sigh of relief after 90 minutes of football despite not being convincing enough prior to the international break.
But the Reds stretched their unbeaten streak to 12 games in Premier League and briefly reclaimed the top of the table spot.
