Liverpool’s recent success in Premier League has been overhyped by many due to an unbeaten run, however, most of their results were encouraging yet not convincing enough and the 2-0 humiliation against Red Star Belgrade tonight singled out so many things that are not working out for Jurgen Klopp in Merseyside.
A defeat to Napoli in their previous European encounter on the road was not only disastrous but also the worst possible performance by the Reds in months and a surrender against the Serbian minnows hit the new low tonight and minimized their hopes of making it to the knockouts.
The runners-up last season needed a favourable outcome to smoothen their way towards the Round of 16 of the prestigious Champions league football. Although the atmosphere in Belgrade was hostile, the Reds were needed to show utmost professionalism similar to their title rivals – a trait that makes them successful in achieving silverware, unlike Klopp’s men. But a calamitous start and a dreadful miss from Daniel Sturridge saw the hosts regaining the grip and Milan Pavkov scored twice in quick succession bullying the Liverpool players. He headed home from Marko Marin’s corner followed by a thunderous strike dodging Gini Wijnaldum. The Reds failed to come back into the game despite playing a possessional football and the determination from the Serbian champions earned them a much-deserved victory.
Feeble Liverpool are now in deep trouble and must secure results against Paris St-Germain and Napoli in the remaining fixtures who are indubitably in a better position now to make it to the next round.
