VIDEO: Arsenal vs Liverpool Highlights, Match Stats and Review

A draw is a fair result but the Reds will find it as two points dropped having been denied a first-half goal controversially.

A clash between Arsenal and Liverpool never failed to entertain the football fanatics in recent years but the Emirates encounter this evening was more of a strategic battle between two charismatic managers. Liverpool almost secured a result following a James Milner strike just over the hour mark but their party was ruined by Alexandre Lacazette who kept his cool to finish it with 8 minutes remaining of the regulation time.

Arsenal, a revitalised force under Unai Emery, had a commanding start with some entertaining passing football. But the Reds looked to threaten from the back and was controversially denied a goal when Sadio Mane found the target. Roberto Firmino’s chip hit the woodwork and the rebound was put into the back of the net by the Senegalese who looked onside from replays. Henrikh Mkhitaryan failed to direct his header into an empty goal following a wrong outing by Alisson whereas Virgil van Dijk saw his effort denied one-on-one by Bernd Leno in Arsenal’s last line of defence. The Dutchman hit the woodwork in the closing seconds of the first half as it ended scorelessly despite the Reds had the best of efforts.

The second half started with more intensity and the hosts looked to play one-touch football in order to create space in a tight Liverpool backline. But a counter movement broke the deadlock when Leno failed to clear Mane’s cross properly as it fell favourably into the path of James Milner. The Liverpool skipper made no mistake to earn the lead which, however, was cancelled out minutes later by Alexandre Lacazette banking on an outstanding finish. A draw has now placed Liverpool at the top temporarily but might slip down to third tomorrow if both Manchester City and Chelsea grab results in their respective home outings.
