Liverpool’s dream start hit a stumbling block in recent weeks failing to win either of their past three fixtures. They had another tricky home tie this evening against leaders Manchester City and an encouraging record against Pep Guardiola’s men handed the Reds a massive boost to be back to winning ways.
But the game, surprisingly, turned out to be a mundane outing as both the teams settled for one point having failed to find the net after 90 futile minutes of football.
Liverpool had a bright start which faded off pretty soon and the visitors looked to have a more defensive strategy than usual to close down space in the defensive third. The lack of creativity in midfield let the Reds down alongside the failure of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane high up the pitch. Both the teams failed to create any distinct goal-bound chances except a late drama when Leroy Sane controversially went down to earn a spot-kick against Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman seemed to have touched the ball before making contact with the German youngster but was relieved when Riyad Mahrez skied the effort throwing away a definite win from Anfield after years of disappointment.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool – all have gathered 20 points before entering the international break but the Reds have now dropped to third on goal difference behind leaders City and scintillating Chelsea.
