India have added another convincing test victory at home to their bag after they beat West Indies by an innings and 272 runs. Windies were already in a dilapidated state at the end of day 2, trailing India by 555 runs with 4 wickets remaining in the first innings.
Day 3 started with Roston Chase and Keemo Paul in the batting crease. Both the batsmen made their intentions clear from the start of the day. They took the charge to the Indian spinners. Paul managed to hit 7 fours and two sixes as he scored 47 runs in 48 deliveries before being dismissed by Umesh Yadav. His departure opened the floodgates. Ashwin cleaned up Chase and reduced the batting side to 159-8. Devendra Bishoo’s three boundaries late in the innings could not make much of a difference. The West Indies side were bowled out for 181 runs.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli decided to enforce the follow on. West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell arrived on the crease for the second time in two days. Kieran Powell looked to take on Ashwin from the first ball as he stepped out to hit a six and a four in the very first over. The duo added 32 runs before Ashwin got the better of Brathwaite. Prithvi Shaw held a sharp catch at silly point.
The post lunch session completely belonged to chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. He first removed Shai Hope before dismissing Shimron Hetmyer. A sharp stumping from Rishabh Pant handed Kuldeep his third wicket in the form of Sunil Ambris. The spinner soon got his fourth victim when Roston Chase’s poor shot ended straight in the hands of Ashwin. At this point, the visitors were lingering at 138-5. Powell’s aggressive innings finally came to an end. Kuldeep got his maiden 5fer in the due process. His five wickets in this match meant he has now joined an exclusive list of bowlers who have picked up 5 wickets in an innings in all the three formats of the game. Jadeja picked up Keemo Paul and Ashwin dismissed Bishoo just before tea as Windies were 8 down for 185 runs. It took Jadeja and Ashwin only 35 deliveries to pick up the last two wickets and end the Windies innings who only managed 196 runs in their second innings.
14 wickets in the third day handed India their biggest win in terms of runs in tests. The second and the final test of the series is at Hyderabad on 16th of this month. Away side would be desperate to make a comeback after this thrashing defeat. Whereas, the Indian would look to carry on their good work and aim at another dominating victory.
