A League Cup exit at Anfield following an Eden Hazard masterclass made Liverpool more determined this evening at Stamford Bridge ahead of contesting Chelsea in a crucial Premier League tie. It was Hazard again who almost secured back to back victories against the Merseysiders, however, substitute Daniel Sturridge had other ideas who scored an 89th-minute screamer to steal a point on the road and maintained their unbeaten streak in Premier League after seven gameweeks.
Liverpool had more possession from the beginning whereas Chelsea were patiently waiting in their own half to form counter-attacking threats. Their one-touch football and great passing attributes often troubled the Reds and one such movement led to an early Chelsea goal when the blistering Belgian beat Alisson from the left. The Brazil custodian, although denied Willian one-on-one minutes back, could have done little to stop Hazard from scoring midway through the first half. Mohamed Salah, at the other end, beat past Kepa Arrizabalaga but saw his effort cleared off the line by Antonio Rudiger.
The Reds looked even more purposeful after the break. Sadio Mane was denied spectacularly by the Blues keeper whereas Roberto Firmino’s header was cleared off the line by David Luiz. Alisson, once again, kept the Reds in the contest stopping Hazard one-on-one but Xherdan Shaqiri, who came in place of Salah, struck wide from close range which should have been finished into the back of the net. The drama was not over and the game took a massive twist when substitute Daniel Sturridge scored majestically from distance and shocked the entire Stamford Bridge in closing seconds. The ex-Chelsea forward, too, scored on back to back occasions against his former employers and retained Liverpool’s unbeaten status in Premier League cancelling out Hazard’s opener.
