After the perfect start to the season, the two English giants Liverpool and Chelsea locked their horns in the Carabao Cup fixture at Anfield on Wednesday. The game ended seeing Chelsea through to the next round as Jurgen Klopp’s side have tasted a 2-1 defeat to the visitors. More specifically, The Reds have lost to the Belgian sensation Eden Hazard’s individual brilliance.
As expected, both the managers selected their starting XI resting most of their key men from the squad as they will meet again on Saturday at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League fixture. Chelsea man-in-charge Maurizio Sarri promoted the outcast players like Andreas Christensen, Emerson, Victor Moses in the starting line-up. On the other hand, the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also promoted the new signing Fabinho to make his first start for the season.
The game started with a dominating Chelsea possession as expected following the new playing style under Sarri. But as the time went, Chelsea started losing their grip on the game and Liverpool started to dominate The Blues from the West London. The first half ended with no goals for each side, though Chelsea could have taken the lead, had the out of form forward Alvaro Morata not missed the opportunities.
In the second half, it was a different Liverpool. They started pressing the visitors and following that, Chelsea players started doing silly mistakes. The Reds could have got a lead of two goals in a quick succession had the drastic back passes from Andreas Christensen and Ross Barkley sent past the goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero. The Argentine goalkeeper made two stunning saves to save his side. But in the 59th minute in the game, the ex-Chelsea man Daniel Sturridge took the lead as he scored from a phenomenal bicycle kick.
However, the home side lost their lead in the 79th minute as the Chelsea left-back Emerson scored by poking the deflected ball from the Liverpool last man Simon Mignolet. Chelsea got the goal following a free kick awarded by the VAR. Although Klopp questioned the relevancy of the free kick and also claimed the goal to be an offside one in the post-match interview, there was no mistake in the decision, as the replay suggested.
When everyone considered the game was heading towards the deciding penalties, the Belgian sensation Eden Hazard showed his class stunning the opponents. From the midfield, he dribbled through six Liverpool players with two nutmegs and smashed the ball into the back of the net. This goal assured Liverpool’s exit from the tournament and proved why Eden Hazard is currently one of the bests in the world.
