Gameweek 6 started with a 1-1 draw between Fulham and Watford, and ended with an Arsenal victory over Everton. In between, Manchester City and Liverpool got emphatic victories while Chelsea and Manchester United faltered against weaker opponents. It was an enthralling weekend for the neutrals, and let us take a look at which players produced the best in this week.
As many as eight teams managed to finish gameweek 6 without conceding. But, when it came to pick the best goalkeeper, it was truly a choice between Petr Cech and Lukasz Fabianski, both having ensured clean sheets for their sides with six stunning saves. We are going with the Arsenal custodian in our team of the week.
There were a few centre-backs who produced stellar performances in gameweek 6. Fabian Balbuena of West Ham was crucial in the Hammers’ 0-0 stalemate against Chelsea. Similar performance was produced by Federico Fernandez against Crystal Palace. Joel Matip was significant in Liverpool’s dominant victory over Southampton. Not only he held the fort with Virgil Van Dijk, but he also scored for the Reds. James Tarkowski and Shkodran Mustafi are a couple of other defenders who were good in their roles. In the end, we have decided to select Matip and Balbuena in our side.
In the two flanks, our picks are Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ben Chilwell. The Crystal Palace right back continued his good show and was instrumental in the Eagles’ shutout against Newcastle United. Chilwell, on the other hand, provided good services for Leicester City on both ends of the pitch. Along with good numbers in defense, he also was responsible for five key-passes for the attackers. Other than this duo, Trent Alexander-Arnold is another sideback who performed really well and deserves special mention.
The central role is given to Luka Milivojevic who was the best player on the pitch in Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United match. Six crucial tackles, three shots, four dribbles – these numbers show he was all over the field and it’s bad that his contributions could not lead to a Palace victory. But he is surely our central midfielder of the team. On either side of him, we choose Manchester City players. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan were magnificent in the defending champions’ demolition of Cardiff City. Both players scored and assisted in Manchester City’s 5-0 victory at Cardiff. Some other players who produced decent performances are Fred, Johann Gudmundsson and Aaron Ramsey.
Harry Kane, Kelechi Iheanacho, Aleksander Mitrovic and Alexander Lacazette were star performers of the week. However, their displays were eclipsed by one man who took it by storm three seasons ago and has kept producing that form every time since then. It’s none other than Jamie Vardy who will be our forward for gameweek 6 eleven. The Foxes forward scored in the team’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield and was fierce whenever he got the chance.
On the left wing, Aaron Lennon will be slotted in. Burnley managed to get back to winning ways, and large credit goes to the left-winger who scored and assisted and was always troubling the Bournemouth defense. His partner on the right is someone who could not register his name on the scoresheet, neither did he end up in the winning side. However, Willian was very good against the Hammers and he deserves a place for his continuous efforts and runs down the right flank. Other than these two attacking midfielders, James Maddison, Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are some other names who should get a special mention in gameweek 6.
