Jose Mourinho will certainly make some changes in the line-up but due to underwhelming form, he may now be tempted to field a stronger-than-expected lineup to at least keep United on course for silverware in the EFL Cup, a competition that has served him well down the years.
United will still be without attacker Marcus Rashford as the forward serves the final match of a three-game domestic ban while Marcos Rojo will miss the tie due to injury, though midfielder Nemanja Matic is back in contention after completing his own one-match suspension and could well start off the game. Defender Eric Bailly could make a return to the starting lineup in place of Smalling while right-back Diogo Dalot is expected to take Valencia’s position after a superb display in the Champions League against Young Boys.

Attacker Tom Lawerence however just like Rashford will be disappointed to miss out on a return to his boyhood club as he too will serve the last of his three-game suspension. However, with the league the first priority Lampard could give rest to veteran David Nugent and instead bring in the winger Jack Marriott.
