Last season’s UEFA Champions League finalists Liverpool FC couldn’t have asked for a better start to this year’s campaign, as The Reds ensured all three points from their opening game against French Champions, Paris Saint Germain. And huge credits would go to Roberto Firmino for this victory.
Having scored two goals within the first 36 minutes of the match, it looked like Liverpool FC were on their way to yet another massive victory at Anfield. However, Tomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint Germain had other thoughts, as Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier and French youngster Kylian Mbappe led the charge and completed the turnaround within the final seven minutes of the game.
Just when it looked like Liverpool and PSG were heading towards an opening day draw, substitute Roberto Firmino, who had suffered an eye injury in Liverpool’s win over Tottenham over the weekend, came off the bench and scored a 91st-minute winner for The Reds in thrilling fashion and literally with just the one eye!
Following the conclusion of a thrilling opening day match, Liverpool’s Senegalese frontman Sadio Mane had subsequently revealed that it was initially his idea to convince the Reds forward Firmino to declare himself fit for Liverpool’s opening day game against PSG.
“I think Bobby doesn’t need his eye to play so I told him. I sent him a message on Monday saying, ‘Hey Bobby, come on, we need you’. You’ve all seen the ‘no look’ goals so I think he doesn’t need his eye to play. I texted him saying, ‘You don’t need your eye’.”
Despite not being completely fit to play, Roberto Firmino definitely was the turning point in Liverpool’s stunning win over PSG, as Jurgen Klopp’s men can now shift their focus towards their next big match against Southampton FC in the Premier League, before returning to the UCL with an away game at Napoli.
As for Paris Saint Germain, they will now look to get back to winning ways against Stade Rennes on Sunday.
