Liverpool have strengthened themselves significantly this summer in the aftermath of back to back ‘top four’ finish and are now chasing for the title glory by increasing quality as well as squad depth. They are flying high in Premier League with five successive wins but are also working on transfer deals that might be pursued in winter.
If reports are believed to be true, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is keeping close tabs on Azzurri youngster Nicolo Barella who has also been scouted extensively by Tottenham Hotspur in recent months. The Italy U21 international progressed through the youth setup of Cagliari and is currently having his third successive full season for the Sardinian outfit.
At 21, the versatile midfield prodigy also received senior call-up last year having represented his nation in several youth ranks. Cagliari are enjoying a decent Serie A run this term and Barella is mostly being utilized from the left-hand side of their midfield. He scored 6 times in 35 appearances last season and has already found the target once against Atalanta which proved to be the decider.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have added Naby Keita and Fabinho alongside Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana. However, the season-long injury blow of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has left a massive void and the gaffer does not want to miss out the opportunity of roping in the future sensation of Italian football. He is hard-working as well as a strong tackler who holds great set-piece attributes including direct free-kicks. Barella is valued around £35million and there’s a reason why Liverpool are leading the queue over Spurs and Milan giants.
The player has reiterated his desire to experience English football and meet his idol LeBron James, as stated in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport :
“If I had to choose between Serie A and the Premier League, I’d go for England, because I like the way they approach the game. Plus everyone there is just as irritable and prone to fouls as me!
“My dream is to get a nice house with a garden and a pool. And to meet LeBron James.”
James, the NBA legend ( currently on the books at the LA Lakers) owns a stake in Liverpool and attends the games frequently. His attachment with the club has handed the Reds an edge over others to snap up a deal for the highly-rated prospect. Liverpool and Cagliari share a cordial relationship which has been smoothened further following the transfer of Ragnar Klavan – the Estonian who completed a summer swoop after two impressive seasons with the Merseysiders. It is to be seen now how Barella performs in next few months before the window reopens in winter and clubs jump up to acquire the Azzurri U21 star.
