Premier League football returned this weekend with one of its most exciting contests when Liverpool locked horns with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley this afternoon. The visitors suffered a disastrous 4-1 defeat against the North Londoners last season but accomplished a revenge today with an edgy 2-1 triumph and maintained an all-win record to keep hold of the top of the table spot for the time being.
Liverpool started the game brightly and netted within seconds which, however, was rightly ruled out for offside. But the pressure continued and chances were being created frequently forcing the hosts making silly errors at times. The deadlock was finally broken minutes before the first half when Gini Wijnaldum’s header from a corner crossed the line and the Dutchman finally got his first away goal in the league, having failed to do so in last three seasons. Harry Kane was well contained by Virgil van Dijk and Lucas Moura, although was creating some disturbance with his pace, failed to beat past resilient Joe Gomez barring a couple of second-half incidents.
The Reds took ten minutes after the break to double the lead when Michel Vorm failed to grab the ball properly and it fell favorably into the path of Roberto Firmino who had little to do to put it into the back of the net. The Brazilian was scintillating all throughout but was forced to leave the pitch with an eye injury with around 20 minutes remaining. Liverpool should have put the game to bed much earlier but kept on wasting opportunities as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and also Wijnaldum let down Klopp with poor decision making and execution of efforts. Substitute Erik Lamela stunning volley into the stoppage time brought Spurs back in contention, however, the Reds saw out the remaining seconds and clinched a huge win on the road before hosting giants Paris St-Germain this midweek in their opening Champions League group stage encounter at Anfield.
