Manchester United’s search for a director of football has not stopped yet but according to recent reports, CEO Ed Woodward has made Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta top of his priority list for the role at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils intend to revamp their recruitment strategy once the current rebuild of the club and development of offices is finished. An executive of football would be selected to perform the additional layer of work to recognize players and recommend future additions.
Manchester United made only three new signings in the Summer transfer window this term. Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, Porto right-back Dalot and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant joined the squad. However, manager Jose Mourinho was left baffled by the inability to land another centre-back and mostly a right-winger. The Portuguese manager besides did not shy away from scrutinizing CEO Ed Woodward a few times during the pre-season visit.
But to ease the matter, it is believed that United are now set to adapt to the new policy of Sporting director and Woodward has now made it clear that he intends to lineup a candidate who can particularly establish a connection between the manager and the board, especially since the transfer window was adjudged a failure.
United have not had an executive of football in their 140-year history however just like clubs like Manchester City, Sevilla, Roma and Arsenal and so forth, they are now ready to adapt to the procedure and some of the names have already doing the rounds for the role.
United have been recently linked with AS Roma and Sevilla’s former well known and high profile Sporting director and Juventus’s Fabio Paratici while Rb Leipzig’s Paul Mitchell has also been considered. But some of the recent reports now have suggested, Woodward has zeroed on Atletico Madrid Director of football Andrea Berta primarily and rest of the mentioned names are his backup options.
Berta joined Atletico in 2013 before taking up a role as sporting director a year ago. He joined the club from Serie A side Genoa and climbed from scout to overseeing the complete technical operation at the Wanda Metropolitano, including the first team, youth and recruitment. He was linked with Paris Saint-Germain before being appointed sporting director at Atletico but he chose to remain at Spain and now is seeing his reputation continues to grow.
Berta who is now touted as a miracle worker among the Atletico crowd was responsible for the club’s key signings including Jan Oblak and Jose Gimenez. Moreover, he also played a crucial role in convincing Diego Godin plus Antoine Griezmann to reject Manchester United and Barcelona respectively to sign a new contract this summer besides resigning of Diego Costa has also been hailed.
Reportedly, United have already made their interest in him known and are hoping to announce an appointment before the end of the year. But given the Italian only took the big role just last year and his current positions at present are far more stable than United it will be interesting to see how the situation ultimately unfolds.
