Former Legend believes Liverpool should drop Cup Aspiration

Former Liverpool FC legend John Barnes has made some interesting comments about what his former club’s aspirations should be this season.

According to the former England International, Liverpool FC should only be focussing on catching up to defending champions Manchester City this season, even if that means giving up on winning any of the cup competitions this season.

18-times league champions Liverpool FC have not won any silverware since 2012, when they defeated Cardiff City in the final of the English League Cup. Before that their last trophy came in 2006, when Steven Gerrard inspired another famous comeback to win the FA Cup against West Ham.

Since 2012, they have come close to winning silverwares on 5 different occasions. They lost the FA Cup final against Chelsea in the same year(2012) under Kenny Daglish, before losing 3 Cup finals with Klopp. They also came very close to win the Premier League in 2013-14 season, before losing on the final day of the season to Manchester City.

Since that season, despite having a better head to head record with the Manchester club, Liverpool have never looked threatening to win the league.

On being asked in an interview with Express Sport, how a successful season for The Reds will look like, the Liverpool legend said, “Getting Close to City!”

“People talk about winning trophies but they’re wrong. We could win the FA Cup by beating Swindon and Tranmere.

“You can win a trophy by not playing top teams. You can’t just win a trophy because you don’t know who you’re going to play.

“What you know in the league is who you’re going to play week-in, week-out.

“You should be able to suggest that we [Liverpool] will be closer to the top.

“I know people talk about winning trophies as success, but I’d rather be 10 points closer to Man City and not win a trophy than win the League Cup or the Europa League and be 25 points behind City.

“Getting close to the top of the league shows how good you really are.”

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were runaway winners last season, and still are the number one favourites to lift the cup this season. Liverpool and Chelsea are said to be their main threats to knock them off their perch.

Despite Barnes’ comments, Liverpool fans will be mightily disappointed if their team do not end up winning any silverware this season. Liverpool have made a perfect start to the season so far with 4 wins from 4.

With the addition of Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita, Liverpool have improved the squad a lot and trophy aspirations will be the main goal for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
