Under new manager Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea’s first few days in this season have gone perfectly. And one player who was instrumental in every match was Marcos Alonso.

So far, the Blues have scored 10 goals and maintained an all-win record in the Premier League. Surprisingly, Alonso had his contribution in as many as six of those goals Chelsea scored. The left back scored in the important tie against Arsenal, a match Chelsea scraped through with a scoreline of 3-2. Barring that, he provided an assist in five other goals till now. This certainly shows how good the player is in the attacking front.

However, Alonso needs to step up as a defender. He is good, but he can improve more and that will be fantastic for his team. This idea was resonated in Sarri’s words, as per Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella.

While there were talks about the player leaving for Spain, the new Chelsea boss said, “I think Alonso in this position at left back, he is the best in Europe. He has top qualities but he can improve in the defensive phase. He could become the best left back in the world.”

When the boss puts that much faith, any player would not want to leave, and that was evident from Alonso’s words. The Spaniard commented on the potential move, “I never saw myself outside Chelsea this summer. I am very happy there, I have three years left on my contract and my idea has always been to stay. In England, I feel very well known, not only by Chelsea fans, but also other teams.”

Marcos Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina for £24 million in August, 2016. During the first two years, he played a pivotal role for the club. His role as the left wingback was crucial in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system, something that eventually led to Chelsea’s Premier League title that season. The player has continued that form in the next season too and now, Maurizio Sarri is happy with his performances.

It remains to see whether Alonso can continue the form and keep contributing on both ends of the pitch, but the fact that he never considered leaving Stamford Bridge will be great for the Chelsea fans who are starting to hope again for a magnificent season.
