The Premier League is back and with it came excitement, passion, drama and goals.
Title favourites Manchester City, Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotsour all made winning starts to the season. But Arsenal lost their opening match against City at the start of the Unai Emery era. Amongst the new boys, Wolverhampton Wanderers were the only team to salvage a point on the opening week, as they twice came from behind against 10-men Everton at home. Both Cardiff City and Fulham lost 0-2 against AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively.
Altogether 25 goals were scored on the opening weekend. Here are our top picks from the week:
3.) Luke Shaw (Manchester United) vs Leicester City:
Manchester United kicked off the new season against Leicester City on Friday, with a 2-1 win at home. England international Luke Shaw was instrumental in this win. Not only did he defend well, but also scored the all important second goal. This was his first goal in the League for the 20 times League champions. After some neat passing game in the attacking third, Juan Mata crossed the ball to the left for Shaw. The fullback’s first touch was not the best, but he still managed to get the ball over the head of the onrushing defender. He quickly followed it up to hit a sudden side volley into the right bottom post. Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel had no chance to save it despite his best efforts. Shaw’s debut goal is third on our weekly list.
2.) Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) vs Arsenal FC:
The new season is running and the defending champions are on their way to reclaim their crown in style. It took them just 14 minutes to open their account in the season, before another goal in the second half solidified their win. English international Raheem Sterling continued to carry his good form from last season back into the new one. After receiving the ball just inside the box in the far left hand side, he started to cut back inside. After getting away from Hector Bellerin and debutante Matteo Guendouzi, the former Liverpool FC winger expertly steered the ball home from inside the D-Box. Even though former Chelsea FC custodian Petr Cech was partially at fault for the goal, it was still classy. Sterling’s goal is the second best on our list.
1.) Ruben Neves (Wolverhampton Wanderers) vs Everton FC:
The Wolves are back in the top flight of English football. They twice came from behind to salvage a point against Everton at home, on a rainy evening. Their Portuguese star Ruben Neves marked his arrival on the big stage with a memorable goal. Everton were reduced to 10-men with a few minutes to go to the break, after a mistimed challenge from Phil Jagielka on the edge of the D-Box. With already a goal down, up stepped Neves for the 2017-18 Championship winners. The Portuguese star curled in the free kick right into the top corner. England’s world cup star Jordan Pickford should have had done better, after getting a hand to it, but it still does not take away the credit for the quality of the strike. Ruben Neves’s first goal in English top flight is our Goal of the week.
