Last year’s out-of-favour player has a big future at Chelsea, reveals new boss Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri's side have started the season on a winning note.

Chelsea have started their Premier League 2018/19 campaign with an emphatic win over Huddersfield Town. The new boss, Maurizio Sarri is naturally happy with the performance of the players, and he has now revealed his opinion on one star of the first match.

Previously, under Antonio Conte, Chelsea used to employ a 3-4-3 formation. But, Sarri is a big advocate of 4-3-3 and that was the setup he used against Huddersfield. In this lineup, Cesar Azpilicueta moved to his natural right-back position instead of being one of centre three, as he used to be under Conte. Marcos Alonso was slotted in at the left back position while Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz had the responsibilities at the central defense.

This brings into attention the case of Luiz, who was largely overlooked last season. In Chelsea’s title-winning 2016/17 campaign, the Brazilian was a key member in Conte’s 3-4-3 formation. However, he went out of favour last year and made only 10 appearances for the Blues. But, now, Sarri has revealed that he has high hopes about Luiz and the 31-year-old is going to be a crucial member of this side.

I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance. We only have to carry on like we are doing now with him,” Sarri commented after the match.

The boss also thinks that the former Paris Saint-Germain man is capable of fitting into any defense lineup. According to him, Luiz is good enough to be a part of his system as well. Sarri said, “I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders. If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four.”

The new manager also revealed that David Luiz is actually going to be important for the team both on and off the pitch. David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him,” he said.

It is evident that the defender’s experience makes him a valuable member of the new-look Chelsea side, and the gaffer is hopeful for a brighter future. The Stamford Bridge side have played well in the first match, and the fans expect similar outings in coming days as well. Chelsea will face Arsenal next Saturday, and that will be a big match for Maurizio Sarri.
