Tottenham Hotspur will be making a very tricky trip to the far north, when they take on fairly confident Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on the opening week of the new Premier League season.
One of the most consistent teams of the last few seasons, Tottenham Hotspur will be opening their league campaign with a few consecutive away fixtures, owing to the completion of their new stadium. On the very first weekend the Spurs travel far north to take on Newcastle United.
Tottenham finished 3rd last season under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, in addition to topping their UCL group that also consisted of Borussia Dortmund and and eventual champions Real Madrid.
But surprisingly they did not make a single new signing in the summer. But to give credit to the North London club, they already have one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, if not in whole of Europe. Tottenham retained the whole of their last season’s squad, and they are once again raring to go in the new one. The Spurs will look to start their campaign with a win on Saturday.
Newcastle United coach Rafael Benitez was not particularly happy with their summer business. Having finished 10th last season, the former Liverpool manager, expected a lot more fund from the owners to compete for European places this season.
But unfortunately, the team management did not oblige with the funds and ambition from their side. The Magpies spent a total of £22.5 million on bringing the likes of Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto and Federico Fernandez. They also brought in Kenedy and Salomon Rondon on loan.
While the team doesn’t look to bad, losing Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mikel Merino will affect them. Nevertheless, the Northerners will look to start their campaign with an upset win against Tottenham.
