James Milner has been a crucial part of the Liverpool squad, since his move to Anfield in 2015. The former Manchester City player has played pivotal roles whenever the boss needed him to, and he continues to be that force for Jurgen Klopp.
With the preseason tour going well for the Reds, the veteran has shared his opinion on how good the Liverpool squad is at the moment. Last year, largely due to a magnificent attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Liverpool had a very good season. They reached the final of the Champions League and produced some extraordinary performances in the Premier League as well. Continuing with the force from the last campaign, Klopp has already added significant new names this summer, and that holds the promises to make the Premier League giants a formidable force.
Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri are some big names to add to a squad in a single season. Along with that, Liverpool have also secured the services of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson who can solve the defensive problems of the side. Last winter’s signing, reliable defender Virgil Van Dijk will also be there to provide enough support for the Reds’ only weak point during the last season.
These inclusions have certainly made Milner believe that the team are ready to take on any challenge. “There are so many players here and so much quality and competition for places,” the 32-year-old commented, while talking to Liverpool’s official website.
Moreover, there are a lot of young players who have got chances in Liverpool colours and Milner thinks that they are also going to leave important contributions this season.
“Some people might think that’s to make up the numbers at the start, but they’ve more than proven that wrong,” he said. “They’re here for their quality and pushing everyone as well. It’s great to see and for them to come in and be as comfortable as they have been, working hard and showing their quality, it’s not easy to stand out with the amount of quality players we have in the squad, but they’ve come in and stood out.
“There is competition for places all over the field and that’s what you want at a top team.”
The Englishman further thinks that seriousness and commitment have been the best asset for the club. According to Milner, “The biggest thing is seeing what we’re like in training and the sharpness; you wouldn’t know if it was preseason or the middle of the season.
“The last few days have been pretty tough, but that’s what you expect at a training camp. We had three sessions yesterday, another tough one today and double sessions earlier in the week. That’s what training is about in preseason; it’s not fun, but you can see the team improving every day and the sharpness getting back to the level.”
Liverpool will start their Premier League journey on 12th August, against West Ham. And Milner said that everyone at the club is ready to kick off the new campaign on a high note.
