A spirited display against the Argentinians saw the Croats humble the South Americans 3-0 in their second match of the FIFA World Cup 2018.
Back to back wins ensured that Croatia will be playing in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 20 years. Iceland on the other hand missed a glorious chance to ensure their place in the next round after a 0-2 defeat against the Nigeria.
The two European nations will be locking horns for the first time in World Cup history when they face off on Tuesday at the Rostov Arena in Rostov-on-Don. This will be the 3rd time in 3 years that the two sides will face off in competitive internationals; the two teams were in the same qualifying group for the world cup as well.
Croatia have always been the dark horses of the world cup ever since they debuted in the 1998 World Cup. This is the first time since their debut venture, when they finished 3rd, that they are playing to their potentials. In two matches, they have scored 5 goals against powerhouses Nigeria and Argentina, while conceding none. They are almost assured of a top finish in Group D. The final group day match will be more of a testing ground for their coach to try out their bench strength, which on paper, is quite formidable.
Iceland, meanwhile, have disappointed the fans. They suffered a crushing 0-2 defeat against the Nigerians, after an inspiring performance against the Argentines in the first match. They had beaten Croatia in their last encounter en route to Russia and will need nothing short of a win to ensure their knockout progression this time around.
Injury and Suspension:
For Iceland the participation of Ragnar Sigurdson and Johan Berg Gudmundsson are in doubts for the match. For their opponents, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Rakitic, Ante Rebic, Sime Vrsaljko and Mario Mandzukic are expected to be kept out of the match as all of them are a yellow from missing the round of 16 match.
Hannes Halldorsson; Birkir Saevarsson, Kari Arnason, Ragnar Sigurdson, Hordur Magnusson; Aron Gunnarsson, Emil Hallfredsson, Johann Gudmundsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Birkir Bjarnason; Alfred Finnbogason
Lovre Kalinic; Tin Jedvaj, Vedran Corluka, Domagoj Vida, Josip Pivaric; Milan Badelj, Mateo Kovacic, Filip Bradaric; Marko Pjaca, Andrej Kramaric, Ivan Perisic
For Iceland, Everton star Gylfi Sigurdsson will once again be the key player. After having missed a penalty against the Nigerians in their last game, the midfielder will be desperate to make amends in this game. Aron Gunnarsson and Birkir Bjarnason will also be absolutely crucial for the Iceland midfield. Hannes Halldorsson will once again be the man to do vital goalkeeping duties.
In absence of a number of top players, Ivan Perisic will be leading the line. The Inter winger will once again look to run riots across the opposition defenses, while making good linkups with Mateo Kovacic and Andrej Kramaric. Vedran Corluka will be key at the back.
