Gelson Martins, 23, has been an instrumental player for the Lisbon side but has been among the players who are looking to terminate his contract after a brawl with the supporters where masked ultras of the club reportedly attacked and beaten the players in the club training ground.

The Gunners are among the host of clubs who are now looking to snap up the winger for free, as the player will not cost any transfer money if he cancels his contract at his current club. The 18 timed Portugal capped player is currently with his national team in Russia and is wanted by some other clubs as well. Sky Sports reported that Benfica, Tottenham are also interested and that will be a stern test for the North London giants to bring him at the Emirates.

With manager Unai Emery at the helm of the Arsenal after the departure of Arsene Wenger and their reported lack of transfer fund this season, a free signing of Gelson Martins will be ideal.

The 22 year old has been a key figure for his club in the past couple of seasons and is expected to play a crucial role in the Arsenal side, particularly his wing play will be important as the Gunners don’t have any natural wingers after the departure of both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain last season.

Martins scored 13 goals and provided 13 assists during the season and was the subject of two failed bids from Arsenal, as both the times the Portuguese side rejected a bid around €30 million from the Gunners. As the Gunners weigh up a swoop for Martins, they are thought to be closing in on a double deal for midfielder Lucas Torreira and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
