Peru achieved their best ever FIFA World ranking of 10 in October last year. Currently 11th in the world, the nation from the North-West of South America will be expected for a strong show in their return to the World Cup. Drawn in a group with France, Australia and Denmark, Peru will be expected to make it to the round of 16 at Russia.

Teófilo Cubillas of Peru was the first player ever to score 5 goals in 2 World Cup finals. He is also one of the 3 players to have achieved this feat (thomas Muller and Miroslav Klose the other two) despite never playing in the last 4. Peru also hold the modern record for the longest time between qualifications with 36 years (they last qualified in 1982). The all-time record although is held by Egypt (56 years 1934-1990) and Norway (1938-1994).
