Arsenal, Liverpool or somewhere else? £52m Barcelona star reveals his decision about Premier League move

Both Arsenal and Liverpool want a goalkeeper in their squads.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are in dire need to sign a new goalkeeper, and Barcelona’s second choice custodian Jasper Cillessen has attracted considerable attention from both clubs. In a recent interview, the Dutchman has finally revealed that he is open to move to England, but only if his current club decides to sell him.

Cillessen has been playing for Barcelona since 2016. Previously, he had a spectacular five year stint with Ajax and was also the number one for the Netherlands national side during 2014 World Cup.

Unfortunately, of late, the talented goalkeeper has not got many opportunities at Camp Nou. Marc Andre Ter Stegen continues to be the Spanish giants’ first choice, and Cillessen only played primarily in Copa Del Rey, a tournament Barcelona ended up winning. Along with nine Copa Del Rey matches, the Dutch featured in one UEFA Champions League game and a La Liga outing as well. He was good in those 11 matches, conceding only 3 times.

It goes without saying that a player would want to get more opportunities, and naturally a move to Arsenal or Liverpool should be attractive for Cillessen. But, during a recent interview with Fox Sports Netherlands, he made it clear that he will not leave Barcelona unless the club make it clear that he is not needed anymore.

“I think that I played well in the matches I had in the Copa del Rey,” Cillessen commented. “I need to wait patiently. The only thing I know is that Barcelona won’t sell me.”

“I’ll wait until we return on July 16 to see what they’ve decided. I don’t know anything. If the club wants to keep me, I’ll accept that. I signed a five-year deal with them”, he added.

However, the player did not fail to comment on the two clubs in pursuit of him.

“Arsenal and Liverpool aren’t bad clubs”, the 29 year old said. But, he once again reiterated his decision about a possible move to England, “If Barcelona say, ‘We love you,’ then I’ll accept their decision and continue there.”

It should come as a shock for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and new Arsenal boss Unai Emery. Following Loris Karius’s dismal performance in the UEFA Champions League, Klopp is in search of a pair of experienced gloves under the bar. Cillessen would have been a good choice in that sense. The same is true for the Gunners as well. Petr Cech is aging and David Ospina failed to live up to the expectations. But, after the Barcelona player’s comments, Emery will have to look elsewhere for his new recruit.
