Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brazil and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, Fred for a reported fee of £52m. He becomes Jose Mourinho’s first major signing of the summer. This seems like a reply to their rival Liverpool who signed Fabinho a few days ago.
Here is Manchester United’s confirmation on the Fred deal:

The 25-year old centre midfielder is on his way to Russia for the World Cup and can play a big part for Tite and his men. Fred has been a revelation for the Ukrainian side for quite some time and topped the transfer list on many top clubs all around Europe.
Fred joined the Ukrainian giants back in 2013 from Internacional, since then he has featured regularly for them and helped them clinch 2 domestic league titles, two domestic cups and two super cups. The 25-year old has also featured in the UEFA Champions League being a vital player for his manager Paulo Fonseca, as Shakhtar Donetsk reached the rounds of 16 from a pretty difficult group featuring Manchester City, Napoli and Feyenoord. But the Moles were eliminated by Italian giants Roma.
Why will he be a good signing for United?
Fred can be a great signing for the Red Devils as the Brazilian will only add to Jose’s armoury. The 25-year old can be used in a three-man midfield along with Pogba and Matic. Matic can feature as a conventional defensive midfielder protecting the back four, whereas Fred can play in the deep-lying playmaker role, where he can provide crucial interceptions and ignite forward movements for the Red Devils.
The three-man midfield formation means that Pogba will be released of his defensive duties and can freely join the attack whenever needed. The 25-year old actually adds more balance to the United midfield and will allow increasing their attacking teeth with Pogba joining the attack more often. Matic on the other will not be left all alone during the counters as Fred is pretty sharp with his interventions and defensive abilities, so he will be more than an able support for Matic and will also help Pogba unleash his natural play.
Fred has great levels of energy coupled with exceptional creativity making him the ideal deep-lying maker that United wanted. His standout quality is undoubtedly his dribbling ability. The midfielder has averaged an impressive 3.3 take-ons per 90 minutes in the Champions League this season, at a staggering success rate of 95 per cent.
The only weakness in Fred’s game is his lack of aerial ability, which is understandable because of 5ft 7inch stature. The 25-year old can even chip up with some goals occasionally but it will interesting to see how new manager Jose Mourinho uses him.
