According to recent reports, Jose Mourinho is ready to strike a deal with Porto defender Diogo Dalot. For quite a few months, the player has been attracting attention from a few top European clubs, including the likes of Manchester United and Valencia. In fact, scouts from the English club went to observe his game last March when he played for Porto against Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League match at Anfield.

It seems that the defender did not fail to impress the Manchester United management during that visit. Sources suggest that the Old Trafford side are now ready to activate the €20 million buy-out clause associated to Dalot. This is pretty astounding and shows that the Premier League giants are really impressed with him, given that the 19 year old has featured only five times for the senior team of Porto.

Dalot has been in Porto since the beginning of last season and has played 23 times for the B team of the club. His performance was pretty good there, and as a consequence, he earned the cap for the senior team. Following his stint at the Portuguese side, Valencia also got interested to sign him. However, he has already turned down an offer from them. It looks like the youngster is all set to join the ranks at Old Trafford.

Why will it be a good signing for Manchester United?

Diogo Dalot, although primarily a right back, can also play on the left flank. Naturally, he will be able to provide replacements for both Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young. During the last season, the duo were used extensively by Mourinho. The upcoming campaign is expected to be the same, especially since Matteo Darmian is likely to leave the club and Luke Shaw’s future is still under the clouds. Clearly, Dalot’s inclusion will be great for the boss as the teenager can be a substitute for either of the wingbacks.

Moreover, Dalot will bring fresh blood to a defense lineup that has aged players like the aforementioned pair. With fast-paced Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial in the side, Mourinho can go for quicker counter-attack based strategies, if Dalot can show  some attacking prowess. The youngster has already proved that he can be useful during set-pieces, which will be another advantage for the team.

The inclusion of the Portuguese would further mean healthy competition for Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah both of whom are ready to return from their loan spells. Such competition to find a place in the starting lineup will inevitably improve the quality and intent from the players, and that will be great for a club like Manchester United.
