In the penultimate game of the IPL 2018 group stage, Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians will try to defeat the last boys Delhi Daredevils, in pursuit of a coveted playoff spot.
At this moment, Mumbai sits at the fifth spot, but they have a much superior run-rate than the competitors. And hence, one win against the struggling Delhi outfit should be enough for them to ensure a top-four finish. The hosts, on the other hand, had a terrible season so far, having gone through many turmoils on and off the field. They will simply look forward to finish the season on a winning note.
Delhi Daredevils won their last outing against Chennai Super Kings. Contributions from Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar and Harshal Patel helped them raise a respectable total of 162. In reply, the Super Kings struggled by and large. Only Ambati Rayudu was in a good touch, but since his departure, no one else could fight and in the end, Delhi got a convincing win by 34 runs.
Mumbai played their last match three days ago, when they welcomed Kings XI Punjab at their home. It was a scintillating affair altogether. After some early slip-ups, banking on Kieron Pollard’s quickfire fifty, Mumbai got 186 on the board. Punjab were going well with the formidable duo of KL Rahul and Aaron Finch on the pitch, but once they got out, they could not live up to the pressure. Eventually, Sharma and co sneaked a 3-run victory to stay in contention for the playoffs.
Shreyas Iyer chose to go with only three foreigners and gave chances to Indian youngsters in the last match. He is expected to do the same this time as well. Thus, Manjot Kalra and Sayan Ghosh may get a look-in ahead of Abhishek Sharma and Avesh Khan. It will be also interesting to see whether an out-of-form Glenn Maxwell is dropped to include Jason Roy.
Here is our predicted lineup for Delhi Daredevils:
Prithvi Shaw, Manjot Kalra, Shreyas Iyer (C), Rishabh Pant (Wk), Glenn Maxwell, Vijay Shankar, Harshal Patel, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane, Sayan Ghosh, Trent Boult.
The team management of Mumbai will be ecstatic to see Pollard back in form. He was the only weak link in the lineup, and now the team look all ready for a terrific finish to the season. Their batting will be relying heavily on the top three – Suryakumar Yadav, Evin Lewis and Rohit Sharma. In addition, the power hitting they have down the order is also magnificent. Should the bowling department perform well, Mumbai can expect to get a victory and move forward to the next stages of the cash-rich league once again.
Following is the expected first eleven for the Indians:
Suryakumar Yadav, Evin Lewis, Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (Wk), Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Ben Cutting, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jasprit Bumrah, Mayank Markande.
