MS Dhoni has always been a successful name in the Indian Premier League circuit.
Right from the first season in the IPL, Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings performed brilliantly. In the eight seasons before they became temporarily banned, Chennai won the tournament twice and were runner-up in four more. The team were feared to be the best side of this domestic league and needless to say, the skipper was an indispensable part of it.
However, after the Chennai side was banned in 2015, Dhoni was signed by new franchisee Rising Pune Supergiants and his display was not very good there. The former Indian captain struggled with his bat and that also saw him being relieved of the captaincy duties. This further started raising questions on whether Dhoni’s age has started taking a toll and whether he should retire from the limited over circuit as well.
Well, his performance in Chennai colors this season would definitely put an end to all these murmurs and it is clear that Dhoni still has a lot to deliver as a batsman and a skipper.
Chennai Super Kings are now at the second spot in the league table, and are more or less safe to make it to the playoffs. And the captain is definitely one of the key players for the Super Kings. Dhoni has so far scored 360 runs from 10 matches, at an astounding average of 90. This is in fact the fourth in the list of top scorers in the league.
Naturally, the Chennai batting coach Mike Hussey has been extremely happy. He has been around the IPL circuit for a long time, and he has seen Dhoni batting for many years now. Hussey thinks that the star’s batting display this season is probably the best he has seen for quite a few years.
The Australian further commented on the Chennai captain’s importance in the squad, “[Dhoni] is such an important player for the team. He’s the captain for one, he’s a fantastic keeper, he’s been in unbelievable form with the bat. It’s probably the best I’ve seen him play for quite a few years.
“He’s [a big draw] away from the game as well. We saw the packed house tonight, so many Dhoni fans out there. He’s the key man in our [CSK’s] whole organisation both on and off the field. What I like about him, apart from watching him play in the middle, is the character of the man off the field. He’s very calm and relaxed.”
Chennai Super Kings have some time to rest at the moment, and they next play Rajasthan Royals on May 10th.
