Gameweek 36 saw ten matches being played, and the relegation fight became extremely interesting, while the top four is becoming more clear as well.
This year’s champions Manchester City thrashed West Ham 4-1 to put a question mark on their survival. Manchester United got a victory against Arsenal to consolidate their second spot in the league table, and to ensure that Arsene Wenger’s men finish outside the top four for a consecutive second season. But the biggest result for both sides of the table was the curtain-raiser of gameweek 36. Liverpool and Stoke City ended goalless at Anfield and it might have huge impact on deciding top four as well as on relegation battle.
With Chelsea’s victory over Swansea City, there’s a chance that the Blues can eventually leapfrog Liverpool and secure a place in the top four, along with Tottenham and two Manchester sides. On the other hand, the solitary point Stoke got can help them to a great extent in salvaging their season. It goes without saying that the coming two gameweeks will be extremely fascinating to watch.
Let us now take a look at the best players of gameweek 36.
Two main contenders for this spot are Jack Butland and Mat Ryan. Both managed to get clean sheets against Liverpool and Burnley, respectively and in the process, helped immensely in the relegation battle. We decide to go with Butland, just for the sheer achievement of stopping the likes of Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.
For a consecutive second week, Burnley’s Kevin Long gets a place in our best eleven. He was great in defense and in going forward. He even hit the post against Brighton. He will be joined with Ryan Shawcross and Craig Dawson. Both were fabulous at the center half positions and helped their team maintain the clean sheets.
A few other defenders who are worth mention are Mamadou Sakho, Shane Duffy, Phil Jagielka, Ahmed Hegazi, Jan Vertonghen and Joe Gomez.
At the center of the pitch, Idrissa Gueye and Cesc Fabregas are our picks. The latter, as usual, was brilliant. He in fact scored the winner for Chelsea with a magnificent left footed strike very early in the game. Gueye, on the other hand, was good in both roles. Along with showing great defensive prowess, he also went forward and netted an important goal for Everton in the dying moments against Huddersfield Town.
One key player we hate to leave from this role is Badou Ndiaye. This Stoke star was instrumental in stopping Liverpool midfielders with his tackles and interceptions. Paul Pogba was also very good in Manchester United’s victory against Arsenal.
The two flanks will be occupied by two Crystal Palace players. Patrick Van Aanholt and James McArthur were extraordinary in Palace’s 5-0 thrashing of Leicester City. Both scored in this win and thanks to them, the Eagles are out of the fear zone.
Gameweek 36 did not observe a lot of goals or brilliant attacks and thus, it was an easy choice here. The three forwards in our team of the week are going to be Wilfred Zaha, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling. The Manchester City duo provided yet another memorable performance against the Hammers. Jesus found the net once and claimed one assist as well, while Sterling was responsible for providing three assists for his team. Zaha, on the other hand, scored and assisted for Palace against Leicester.
So, finally, here is our gameweek 36 team of the week:
