Rohit Sharma’s international career is quite a story. This classy Mumbai lad burst onto the scene after hitting a match-winning half-century against South Africa in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Since then, he has been in and out of the team, but in recent years he has become a regular in the Indian side and has been performing impeccably.
We celebrate the Hitman’s 31st birthday by going through his top five innings in International cricket.
5. 208*, ODI vs Sri Lanka:
This was Rohit’s third double ton in One Day Internationals. Just like his other double centuries this innings also had class written all over it. His innings was recorded as the second highest individual score by a captain in One Day Internationals immediately after Sehwag (219). Sharma looked in full control throughout his innings as he demolished a rather inefficient Lankan bowling line-up.
4. 72, Test vs New Zealand:
During India’s tour of New Zealand in 2014, India was struggling in the first innings of the first Test Match played at Auckland. After New Zealand piled up a mammoth total of 503 in the first innings, India lost three early wickets and was reeling at 10/3 when Rohit joined Murali Vijay at the crease. Rohit’s patient 72 of 120 balls meant there was some kind of revival. India eventually went on to lose the Test Match by 40 runs but it was due to the Hitman’s subdued innings that India was able to cross the 200 mark in the first innings.
3. 209, ODI vs Australia:
Till this match the series was levelled at 2-2 and despite a good start India stuttered at 113/2 when Dhawan and Kohli departed in quick succession. From there on it was the Rohit show, the Hitman smashed a record 16 sixes in his scintillating innings of 209 from 158 balls. His innings allowed India to reach a massive score of 383/6 in their allotted 50 overs. India eventually won the game by 57 runs and thereby clinched the 7-match series 3-2.
2. 66, ODI vs Australia:
India till then had never won a Tri-Series final against Australia. The story seemed pretty much the same in the first of the three finals of the 2008 CB series. India was set a target of 240 from 50 overs and they were struggling at 87/3 when Rohit Sharma joined Sachin Tendulkar. A very young Rohit showed immense composure as he along with the Master stitched together a match winning 100-run stand. Rohit’s 66 meant that Sachin got more time to settle in. India not only won that final but also the second final leading to their first ever Tri-Series victory against Australia in Australia. Though Rohit made only 66 runs but the situation in which those runs came and the manner in which he played that innings makes us rate this as Rohit’s second all time best knock.
1. 264, ODI vs Sri Lanka:
This innings will also perhaps feature in the top 10 ODI knocks of all time. Rohit absolutely destroyed the Sri Lankan bowling as he smashed 33 fours and 9 sixes in his brilliant innings of 264 runs from 173 deliveries. India amassed a massive 404 runs in their first innings which ultimately meant India cruising to an easy 153 runs victory. Rohit looked in sublime touch as he just dispatched every ball to the boundary. The lazy elegance in his batting was a treat for the viewers. We definitely feel that this was Rohit’s best innings in International cricket.
