Madrid’s season has been pretty erratic as they are currently lagging far behind from archrivals Barcelona who already have one hand on the La Liga title. Barring from a Champions League semifinal Real’s season are pretty much over.

Stones was brought by Pep Guardiola for a whopping £47.5m in an attempt to rejig his defence. The English international had struggled in his earlier stage at the Etihad Stadium but there has been significant development under Guardiola’s influence and the player has been a regular until the latter part of the season.

His form hit a rough patch following a number of injuries and inconsistent performance. Guardiola brought Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao to stabilize the defence. Also, Vincent Kompany’s commanding display in the heart of the City backline has blocked his path to the first team.

Madrid don’t seem to have enough firepower in the defence department as Jesus Vallejo has rarely played this season. Sergio Ramos is 32 and is in the twilight stage of his career. Which means Madrid would have to carry on with Raphael Varane and Nacho Fernandez if something had happened to them so investing in Stones makes sense.

One of the many qualities that Stones has is his ability to move the ball from the back. Guardiola is an avid admirer of ball playing defenders and that’s why Stones arrived in Manchester.

Also, age is a huge favourable factor as the player is only 23 and could be a perfect partner for Varane in the heart of Madrid defence. His contract is scheduled to expire in 2022 but if Madrid come calling with a substantial offer Guardiola might be interested in letting him go.
