Manchester United, under Jose Mourinho, were one of the favorites to lift the Premier League title. They invested millions in the transfer market to reconstruct the squad but lost it out to ‘noisy neighbors’ Manchester City who maintained their supremacy and conquered the silverware.

Jose Mourinho, however, has already announced another high-spending transfer window and is reportedly keen on reinvesting in midfield. Marouane Fellaini has decided not to sign a new deal and depart upon his contract expiration at the end of this campaign. Michael Carrick is retiring and the gaffer seems to have lost his patience on French superstar Paul Pogba. Ander Herrera has mostly been handed a sporadic role whereas Scott McTominay is too young to handle the pressure week in week out. Nemanja Matic, hence, remains the only proper first-team regular available at Old Trafford and the Portuguese tactician is reportedly plotting a swoop for Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savic.

The Serbian sensation has been a subject of interest of several big guns of Europe including bitter rivals Liverpool. The 23-year-old, however, is valued at £89 mil and the Red Devils are willing to meet his asking fee to strengthen the midfield. Milinković-Savic has been in sublime form this season and is not only controlling the game from the middle of the park but also scoring goals and terrorizing opponent’s back-line with his down the middle runs, physical presence and strong dribbling and shooting traits.

Paul Pogba, their £89.3 million recruit, was thought to slot in a similar role but has failed to adapt to the pace and high-pressing of Premier League football. He is dispossessed far too easily causing trouble for his own backline. If reports are believed to be true, the Red Devils are ready to listen to offers for the Frenchman this summer and eyeing to bring in the Serbian who, they believe, will be a perfect fit in Mourinho’s strategy and style of football. He, alongside compatriot Nemanja Matic, will form one of the strongest midfield in the league and enhance their hopes to reclaim the lost throne last conquered under iconic Sir Alex Ferguson.
