Liverpool’s incredible 3-0 win at Anfield against the mighty Citizens handed them a massive boost ahead of the Champions League quarterfinal return leg tie at Etihad Stadium. Manchester City, however, were determined not to give up and vowed to shake off last week’s shambles to deliver a towering display and script a comeback.
The game, as expected, proved to be a thriller at Etihad but a sensational second-half comeback saw Liverpool grabbing a 2-1 victory and make it to the semis of this prestigious football event.
City, however, had the perfect start when they scored the much-needed opener within two minutes into the game. Virgil van Dijk’s failed to clear the ball properly and ex-Reds Raheem Sterling did well to set it up for Gabriel Jesus who made no mistake to put the hosts ahead. The Reds, surprisingly, sat too depend and the negativity in their came invited troubles one after another. Bernardo Silva hit the woodwork whereas Leroy Sane’s goal was controversially ruled out for offside. Liverpool somehow managed not to concede anymore in the first half as it ended 1-0 in favor of the Citizens.
Pep Guardiola, the City boss, was sent to the stands for dissent at half-time and Liverpool started the second half with much positivity keeping the ball on their feet. They soon earned the reward when red-hot Mohamed Salah equalized minutes into the second half and the Reds finally got their decisive away goal that almost secured their place in the semis. City needed to score 4 past Liverpool but failed to open them up defensively. Roberto Firmino, meanwhile, notched from a Nicolas Otamendi error and scripted an incredible victory defying the odds.
