The Premier League weekend returned in between the two UEFA Champions League game weeks and it surely did not disappoint.
Although the Merseyside derby ended goalless on Saturday, the Manchester derby later that night indeed proved to be the match of the Premier League week. United came back from 0-2 down to delay City’s title celebrations. Arsenal beat Southampton 3-2 to solidify their claim to an Europa League spot while Chelsea’s loss almost assured they will not be in the Champions League next season. Tottenham Hotspurs’ win took them level on points with 3rd placed Liverpool FC, with a game in hand.
Here are the goals of the week:
3) Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (Arsenal FC) vs Southampton FC:
The Gabonese has been in tremendous goal-scoring form in the Premier League since his arrival at North London and he scored a brilliant Arsenal team goal on Sunday. Mohamed Elneny’s pass from the centre circle was well received by the Arsenal number 14 before passing onto Alex Iwobi. Iwobi then found Danny Welbeck on the edge of the penalty area. The England international cleverly tracked Aubameyang’s run and played a clever first time back-heel pass onto his path. The former Borussia Dortmund forward made no mistake as he calmly slotted the ball home for another of the famous Arsenal buildup goal.
2) Ayoze Perez (Newcastle United) vs Leicester City:
Newcastle United have almost confirmed their Premier League survival after defeating former champions Leicester City at their home ground. With The Magpies leading 1-0 through a first half Shelvey goal, Ayoze Perez’s 75th minute strike was nothing short of class. French defender Florian Lejeune sent a long cross from inside the Newcastle half for the Spaniard. With Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire on his shoulders, Perez spotted Schmeichel off his line. After letting the ball bounce once, the former Tenerife man chipped the ball over the Danish goalkeeper’s head with the outside of his right foot.
1) Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City) vs Manchester United:
Manchester City may have blown a 2 goal advantage to lose the Manchester Derby but their second goal by German Gündogan was our Goal of the Week. After receiving the ball back from Raheem Sterling on the edge of the penalty area, he found Eric Bailly on his shoulder. The German international swiftly turned to lose the Senegalese defender, before guiding the ball past David De Gea.
