Champions League 2017-18 is nearing its showdown and the quarterfinals are set to offer some highly intriguing clashes among European heavyweights.
There have been upsets in the Round of 16 fixtures when giants Manchester United were knocked out by La Liga outfit Sevilla at Old Trafford and the Spanish side have now been drawn against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich who have rediscovered their form under new boss Jupp Heynckes. Juventus have knocked out Tottenham Hotspur in a dramatic Wembley encounter and will now contest Real Madrid, the defending champions, who knocked out favorites Paris St-Germain in the previous round. Juventus, the runners-up of the last campaign, will be seeking a revenge over Los Blancos and are determined to win the silverware that they missed out narrowly twice in past three seasons.
Barcelona, the favorites of winning the title, have been drawn against AS Roma who knocked out Shakhtar to seal a quarter-final berth. However, it will be an uphill task for the Serie A side to knock down The Catalans who eased past Chelsea during the previous round. However, the remaining fixture has to be the most fascinating one where two exciting English sides will lock horns to reach the semis. It’s a battle between Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as the Reds have been the only Premier League side to beat the Citizens and destroyed their dream of an unbeaten Premier League title triumph. These two managers have a past history of rivalry during their Bundesliga days when Guardiola used to manage the Bavarians and Klopp was mentoring Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool, as well as Barcelona and Bayern Munich, have achieved the greatest European glory five times each, but the dominance of Real Madrid is unparalleled who have conquered the title record 11 times. Juventus have won it twice but none of AS Roma, Manchester City or Sevilla has achieved it yet. Barcelona, however, are most likely to conquer it this time considering their form and quality, but one must not count Real Madrid off who are a different class in Europe and incredibly knocked down the other favorites PSG en route of their title defense. Pep Guardiola’s masterclass makes Manchester City a prime contender too but the likes of Bayern Munich or Juventus should never be written off in European football.
