Liverpool were going strong in the league until they suffered a disappointing defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United last weekend. Today’s game at Anfield against Watford handed them a glorious opportunity to grab all three points and strengthen their stance for a ‘top four’ finish.
Liverpool, however, managed to secure a massive 5-0 win on a snowy evening at Merseyside and now are upbeat once more before entering the international break.
The Reds had the perfect start when Mohamed Salah danced past the Watford defence to make it 1-0 minutes into the first-half. They, however, lost the way in the middle as misplaced and careless passing were inviting trouble in Liverpool backline. Roberto Firmino’s strike was saved magnificently by the Hornets’ custodian Orestis Karnezis but he could have done absolutely nothing to deal with Andrew Robertson’s majestic cross which was converted by the Egyptian with a simple tap-in late in the first-half. The Reds earned a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to a Mo Salah brace.
Liverpool looked more menacing after the break and they soon found the back of the net for the third time when Roberto Firmino’s outrageous flick ended up into the back of the net from Salah’s cross. Roberto Pereyra came close for the visitors as his free-kick hit the woodwork at the other end. Salah was searching for his hat-trick goal and soon found one when he toyed with the entire Watford defence and scored a stunner to grab his third of the afternoon. The party was not over yet and the chances kept on flooding after Danny Ings inclusion. The Englishman, however, was unlucky not to enlist his name to the scoresheet as one of his two efforts was stunningly denied by Karnezis. But the other one fell kindly into the path of Salah after Karnezis’ save and the Egyptian scored his fourth of the evening from the close range. The game thus ended 5-0 in favor of Liverpool who have bounced back sensationally ahead of the international break.
