Premier League have rarely witnessed such a busy and crazy winter transfer window since its inception, but Liverpool owners and the manager Jurgen Klopp received stern criticism from the supporters for not showing enough intent and buying in players, not even after Philippe Coutinho’s record transfer to Barcelona.
Things, however, are likely to alter in summer as the fans are hopeful once more following the latest reports that claimed Liverpool’s interest in Napoli’s midfield sensation Jorginho. The 26-year-old Brazil-born Italy international has established himself as an integral member of Partenopei Gli Azzurri’s title-challenging campaign under Maurizio Sarri. He was previously linked to a move to Liverpool but preferred to continue his growth at home and completed a winter move from Hellas Verona back in 2014.
Jorginho has appeared 136 times since then for the Light Blues and soon proved his worth as a versatile midfielder. He is capable of playing in an attacking midfield role but mostly viewed as a box-to-box or deep-lying playmaker due to his ability to win back possession, vision, distributing traits, strong passing skills and dictate the tempo of the game. Klopp seems to have given up on Emre Can’s future as the German panzer is now extremely close to complete his Bosman move to Juventus after failing to agree on terms with his current employers. Jorginho is being considered as Can’s replacement in the middle of the park and considering his scintillating run of form, the Azzurri international might just be an upgrade of the departing German.
His agent, Joao Santos, has fueled the transfer talks a few days back during an interview with Radio Crc.
“If a player like Torreira arrives from Sampdoria, then that will require an important investment and Jorginho could be sacrificed to make way. I think we’ll discuss a renewal at the end of the season, as it’s not the moment to talk about that because he still has a long contract. He wants to stay, although we’ll have to see if Napoli agree with that.
“I think they’d rather sell Jorginho than Amadou Diawara, who is younger.”
Although Jorginho still has more than two years left on his current contract, the interest from European heavyweights might see Napoli losing one of their key midfield figures in the summer window. Manchester United are also rumoured to be chasing his signing, but Liverpool’s interest is genuine and they are expected to initiate negotiations with his entourage in coming days.
