After a 0-2 defeat against Tottenham, Manchester United are recovering slowly and are trying to consolidate their second spot in the league table. However, a surprise defeat in the Newcastle United vs Manchester United fixture will definitely shock Jose Mourinho in that aspect.

It was a bright start for the underdogs. Three minutes after the start, Newcastle got a freekick at the edge of the Manchester United box. After an initial block from the wall, the ball fell to Shelvey and he took a thundering strike at the target. It took a mindblowing save from De Gea to keep him at bay, and the hosts revealed that they were not playing for a draw.
For the first half an hour, Rafa Benitez’s men created better opportunities, albeit the majority of the possessions were with the favourites. Then, Martial got the first great chance to put his team ahead. It was a spectacular through-ball from Matic, and the French winger had only the goalkeeper to beat. But, the Newcastle debutant pulled off a brilliant save to keep the scores level. It was second significant save from Duvraka who was clearly having a fantastic day.
Towards the end of the first forty five minutes, there was a moment of controversy when Smalling tackled Gayle inside the Manchester box. But, the referee chose not to give the penalty. The first half scoreline of Newcastle United vs Manchester United remained 0-0.
In the second half, the visitors were on top right from the start. But, their finishing touch was missing. At the 57th minute mark, Sanchez got an open net to put the ball in, but he delayed his shot and eventually saw the shot blocked by a Newcastle defender. And then, 7 minutes after that miss, the home side got the first breakthrough against the run of the game. From a Shelvey freekick, a nicely worked-out back-heel from Gayle found an unmarked Ritchie, who made no mistake to slot the ball home from a close range.
It was slowly turning out to be an unlucky day for Manchester. After the Newcastle goal, the away side pushed for the equalizer, but time and again, Duvraka and his teammates showed great resilience to block off the efforts from Martial and Sanchez and Lukaku. Eventually, the Magpies managed to snatch a brilliant 1-0 win that saw them get out of the relegation zone to safety.
