Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane shined as India have won the first ODI in Durban and have taken a 1-0 lead in the series.
India selected two spinners as Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal got the nod to play. Kedar Jadhav was also playing as Manish Pandey was left out.
For the Proteas, they went with Tahir as a spinner while four pacers were selected.
South Africa won the toss and chose to bat.
The start provided by their openers was steady but Amla lost his wicket as Bumrah trapped him in front. Markram, Duminy and Miller all couldn’t make big runs as Indian spinners were excellent. The mainstay was Faf du Plessis as he steered his side to a total by scoring a magnificent hundred.
Chris Morris also helped him to build a partnership but they lost their way in the latter stages of the innings. Kuldeep Yadav picked up three and was the pick of the bowlers, while Bumrah bowled quite efficiently in the death overs. The hosts could only manage 269 for 8 after their full quota of overs.
Chasing the target, Indian openers started brightly, as both Rohit and Dhawan was positive. Rohit skied one in the air to get out while Dhawan then was victim of a miscommunication and got himself run out on his personal score of 35. Kohli and Rahane then took the control and both were fabulous to build a partnership and imposed over the African bowlers. The home side attack lacked cutting edge and the Indian captain took advantage of it, scoring his 33rd century in process.
Ajinkya Rahane also scored a valuable 79 to cement his place in the side as India won comfortably at the end by 6 wickets. It has been India’s first ODI victory in South Africa in almost seven years.
