Chelsea, the defending Premier League champions, might have been struggling recently, but a heavy 3-0 defeat against relegation-threatened Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was quite hard to digest last night when everything went wrong for Antonio Conte’s men. The defeat now has dropped them to the 4th spot of the league tally and their hope of a ‘top four’ finish is now hanging by a thread considering current downfall.
Chelsea have brought in veteran Olivier Giroud from Arsenal to sort out the striker conundrum but couldn’t register him on time to field against the Cherries. Conte opted to play Eden Hazard as a centre-forward in absence of injured Alvaro Morata and loaned out forward Michy Batshuayi who has plied his trade to Borussia Dortmund. The Blues had a better first-half but lacked finishing. Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso came close but couldn’t put their efforts on target. But the major blow was the injury of in-form Andreas Christensen who was forced to leave the pitch and replaced by Antonio Rudiger. The first-half ended scorelessly.
The Blues had a disastrous inception in the second half when Jordon Ibe placed a through ball that beat past Chelsea defence and Callum Wilson made no mistake to put the Cherries ahead against the flow. The Blues tried but failed to react quickly enough when Junior Stanislas doubled the lead from a counter-attacking move as he placed the ball into the back of the net between Thibaut Courtois’ legs. They were not done yet and it was former Chelsea defender Nathan Ake who scored a couple of minutes later to take the Cherries on top at the Bridge. Chelsea could not stage any late comeback and were forced to surrender disappointingly.
