Liverpool had a shocking defeat last week against bottom-placed Premier League side Swansea City but Jurgen Klopp, the Reds boss, didn’t risk another mishap tonight and fielded a strong lineup against West Brom in their FA Cup fourth-round tie at Anfield.
West Brom, under Alan Pardew, gathered few crucial points of late in their Premier League survival battle but opted for a strong lineup as well in order to achieve cup glory. The game, however, turned out to be an absolute nightmare for Liverpool who surrendered shamelessly and suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to get knocked out from another cup competition.
Liverpool started the game brightly with an early goal via Roberto Firmino. But everything fell apart ever since as Jay Rodriguez equalized within seconds. It was Rodriguez again who earned his side a lead within minutes and Craig Dawson scored another, which eventually got ruled out after applying VAR. Liverpool got the advantage of video replay and earned a spot-kick which, however, was not converted by Firmino who struck it in the post. Liverpool’s night went from bad to worse when West Brom extended their lead via an own goal and the VAR technology could not save the Reds on this occasion.
Liverpool pulled one back in the second-half via Mohamed Salah which didn’t prove to be enough to force a replay. West Brom hung on and came out victorious to proceed through to the next round.
