Robin Van Persie, the 34 year old Netherlands International, is set to return to his hometown club as he declined a contract from Turkish side Fenerbahce thus ending his two and half years stint with the club. BBC confirmed his return and later the Dutch club’s official Twitter handle posted a video announcing his return.

They are going to complete his signing and officially unveil him next week but we understand that everything is done internally so that Van Persie can join the current Eredivisie champions.

The 34-year-old, who has scored 36 goals in all competitions since moving to Turkey in 2015, will sign a contract with Feyenoord on Monday to seal his return to the club where he began his professional career in 2002.

“Nothing stands in the way of a return from the 102-fold international to De Kuip, now that he has come to an agreement with his current club Fenerbahce about the dissolution of his contract,” the Dutch club said in a statement. “Feyenoord and Van Persie reached an agreement about the return earlier this week.”

It is thought that Van Persie will have to emulate what Dirk Kuyt achieved here last season, retiring after helping the club to win the league. The former Manchester United striker has grown frustrated in Turkey and reportedly wants a new challenge in the twilight of his career. Feyenoord are managed by his former international team-mate Giovanni van Bronckhorst and are currently fifth in the Eredivisie, nine points off the Champions League places.

The Dutch International started his career with Feyenoord, before leaving them for Arsenal in 2004 and scored 22 goals for the Rotterdam based club.

Van Persie then left Arsenal to join Man United

He then left the Gunners in 2012 and joined Manchester United much to the fury of Arsenal faithfuls and won the league with the Red Devils. Incidentally another highly raged move is on the cards now as Alexis Sanchez is also set to join United from the North London club this window.
