The Premier League top table took an interesting turn last weekend, when Liverpool stopped the unbeaten streak of Manchester City, and helped rivals Manchester United reduce the point difference at the top table. As we are approaching game week 24, there is a high chance that the British top tier will become even more interesting after Monday.
This weekend, all the big teams are going to enjoy easy outings, but they should be extra cautious not to slip up in these games. Especially, Chelsea and Manchester United cannot do anything wrong should they want to aim for the coveted title this year.
Here is the complete fixture of game week 24:
Five consecutive draws for Chelsea:
This has been a bad time for Antonio Conte’s Chelsea. They have now drawn five consecutive games (not considering the penalty shootout in the FA Cup) in all competitions. More seriously, the Blues failed to score in three of those games and the boss will miss the services of Pedro and Alvaro Morata, due to their irresponsible red cards during the last match.
With all these worries in mind, the Italian will travel to Brighton who themselves have failed to win any of their last four games. Will this game week 24 opener provide a lifeline for Chelsea? Without an iota of doubt, that is going to be our first talking point of this weekend!
Will there be another slip up from Manchester City?
Last weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s team managed to secure a welcome 4-3 victory over City and thereby ruined the chance of an invincible season for the Blues of Manchester. This weekend, Pep Guardiola’s side will welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad, and most certainly, Manchester United and Chelsea, second and third placed teams in the league will look forward to some aid from the Toon army.
Although Newcastle are reeling at the 15th spot, the recent form says that they have lost only game out of their last five. And that solitary defeat came against Manchester City only. In that match too, the minnows fought bravely and suffered a loss by the narrowest of margins (0-1). It will be interesting to see whether they can put pressure on Manchester City and cause an upset on the Saturday showdown of game week 24.
Manchester United travels to out-of-form Burnley:
Things are going well for Jose Mourinho at the moment. Following Manchester City’s defeat against Liverpool, his team secured three points against Stoke City and reduced the points difference to 12. Further, United are likely to secure a deal with Arsenal talisman Alexis Sanchez and that would boost the confidence of the team to a great extent. And then, this fixture against Burnley could not have come at a better time!
The Clarets were performing brilliantly in the first half of the season, and also stayed in top six for several weeks. But, over the last six gameweeks, they failed to win a single game and are now five points below sixth placed Arsenal. Albeit they shared points with United in the last fixture, the current form and motivation the Red Devils have might proved to be a handful for Sean Dyche and his boys.
Harry Kane and Mo Salah – will they score again?
These two players are in exquisite form right now! The Spurs forward has netted 20 times this season (one assist) while the Egyptian has scored as many as 18 goals (six assists) for Liverpool. In game week 24, Tottenham will travel to St. Mary’s to face a relegation threatened Southampton while Liverpool will be aiming to build up on their win against Manchester City with another emphatic victory against struggling Swansea City.
Naturally, chances are high that we will get to observe a few more fantastic goals from Kane and Salah – the top two scorers of the league this season.
