Game week 23 observed ten mind-blowing encounters and Liverpool vs Manchester City was certainly the best of the lot. There have been some exquisite performances and let us see who were the most significant performers of the lot.
It was not a good week for the defensive sides, as 31 goals were scored in ten matches. Some individuals stole the show for their teams and we decide to choose the following eleven players, in a 4-3-2-1 formation for our team of the week of game week 23.
In the week-opener, it was a brilliant clash between Chelsea and Leicester City and both goalkeepers were spectacular in that game. We select Kasper Schmeichel as our custodian as he made as many as seven important saves against Morata and co. Other than these two, Wayne Hennessey was good for Crystal Palace and managed to hand his team a victory against in-form Burnley. Hugo Lloris and Ben Foster also returned with a shutout, but they did not face strong attack and hence are not included in our team of the week.
West Brom duo Ahmed Hegazi and Johnny Evans were brilliant and their resilience helped the team win a match after a long time. While both were equally good, the latter gets a slot in our team as he also scored for the Baggies. Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen will partner Evans in the center of the defense. The Spurs captain’s defensive stats were too good to leave him out of the best eleven of game week 23. Barring these players, Steve Cook (Bournemouth, against Arsenal), Harry Maguire (Leicester, against Chelsea), Christan Kabasele (Watford, against Southampton), Jack Stephens (Southampton, against Watford) played well.
In the right back, our choice will be Crystal’s Tim Fosu-Mensah. He was in a great form and was instrumental in securing a narrow victory for his team. Antonio Valencia was a strong contender as well. He got a clean sheet and scored a screamer to put Manchester United 1-0 up early in the game against Stoke City. Daryl Janmaat (Watford), Serge Aurier (Spurs, against Everton) and Deandre Yedlin (Newcastle, against Swansea) were other right backs who had a good time in the field.
For the other flank, Ben Davies (Spurs) had a nice game against the Toffees; and so did Arthur Masuaku (West Ham) against Huddersfield. But, our pick is Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) who played valiantly against a high-flying Manchester City. Although Liverpool conceded three goals, Robertson’s contributions cannot be ignored and he deserves a nod in our team.
In the central midfield, perhaps an automatic choice is Manchester United star Paul Pogba. His distribution, defending abilities and impeccable passing were unquestionable against Stoke City. The Frenchman also recorded two assists in the first half and took the game away from the visitors.
In front of Pogba, we choose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool) and Manuel Lanzini (West Ham). The former scored the opener for the Reds and was spectacular throughout the game. It was a perfect time for him to step up and take the responsibilities after Coutinho’s departure. Lanzini, on the other hand, scored a brace and took the game away from Huddersfield in the second half.
In the left wing, best performer of game week 23 was Heung Min Son. The Tottenham talisman took as many as seven shots one of which found the back of the nets. He also sent some key passes and recorded an assist to his name. On the right, James Ward-prowse is our selection. He started a game for Southampton after some time and what a match he had! The midfielder found the back of the nets twice and thanks to him, the Saints did not have to suffer yet another defeat.
Some other midfielders and wingers who showed their skills and effectiveness in game week 23 are Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City, against Liverpool), Sadio Mane (Liverpool, against Manchester City), Christian Eriksen (Tottenham, against Everton), Anthony Martial (Manchester United, against Stoke City) and Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth, against Arsenal).
Manuel Lanzini’s partner, Marco Arnautovic played in the forward for West Ham. He was in a deft touch as well, scoring one and assisting two goals in the process. Callum Wilson scored and assisted for Bournemouth and ensured a surprise victory against Arsenal. Liverpool duo Mo Salah – Roberto Firmino and Crystal Palace duo Christian Benteke – Bakary Sako also played well in game week 23. But, it is none other than Harry Kane who gets the lone striker’s slot in our team. He continued his exquisite form and scored two goals this time. The Englishman has been a common name in most of our teams of the week and game week 23 could not be an exception.
