The Gunners are linked with the Premier League star for some months now and there is a possibility that they might go for him this January, especially after the injuries of Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal.

And the former Arsenal defender believes that Arsene Wenger must be adding a defender to his squad, as there is a busy and challenging schedule coming ahead.

Keown wants Arsenal to sign Jonny Evans

“He is a quality central defender,” Keown wrote for the Mail. “I don’t think he is world class but there seems to be a shortage of quality experienced central defenders nowadays.”

“James Tarkowski came to Burnley and has signed a new deal. Arsenal signed Rob Holding for £2 million and he’s doing a job. But it seems that some of these clubs want that finished article.”

He also added that Evans has been a great servant for Northern Irish football but even if he is 30, Keown believes that Evans still can thrive more under the right kind of manager, and he believes Arsene Wenger may well be the right man to guide him.

Man City are also in the race to sign him as the Premier League leaders want him at the Etihad as John Stones and Vincent Kompany both are off the field and haven’t managed to kept themselves to fit for longer stretches.

Gunners manager fielded Holding, Chambers and Mustafi on Wednesday in the League Cup tie against Chelsea, but Evans will add more experience and solidarity in the Arsenal back line. Also it will be a tough decision for the 30 year old to make, as a regular start will be guaranteed at Arsenal but more glittering silverware opportunities will be at Manchester City.
