Liverpool’s hectic scheduled continued on new year’s eve when they traveled to Turf Moor to contest an impressive Burnley side in less than 48 hours time since clinching a narrow win against Leicester City at Anfield.
The game was not at all easy considering Burnley’s sensational Premier League run this term, and the injuries of main men Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho made it look even more difficult for the traveling Reds. But the game proved to be one of the league’s dramatic encounters of this campaign when Ragnar Klavan scored an injury-time winner to dismiss Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s late equalizer and proved to be the unlikely hero to seal all three points for Liverpool.
The first-half was quite mundane as both the teams failed to create enough opportunities and the game was mostly confined in the middle of the park. It, however, witnessed his first major occasion when Sadio Mane scored with a spectacular strike around an hour mark to earn a lead. The Reds had to keep hold of the lead but failed to do so when Joe Gomez allowed Gudmundsson a free-header to equalize in closing minutes. Just when it looked like another draw for both the sides, Liverpool’s central defensive pair came to rescue and restored the lead in closing seconds of the game. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s free-kick was headed into the path of Dejan Lovren who headed it into the path of Ragnar Klavan and the Estonian made to mistake to put it into the back of the net from close range.
The game, thus, ended in a 2-1 win for the visitors who keep hold of the fourth spot ahead of their heavyweight clash against Manchester City in a fortnight’s time.
