A 5-0 win on Boxing Day over bottom-placed Swansea City at Anfield was thought to be a confidence booster for Liverpool midway of the season who dropped too many points this season due to some erroneous displays.
Their Saturday afternoon clash against Leicester City was not an easy outing considering the visitors’ late resurgence since Claude Puel took charge, the ex-Southampton gaffer who Jurgen Klopp failed to beat the last term despite meeting 4 times and had to suffer defeats on a couple of occasions. The Frenchman once again gave the charismatic German gaffer a run for his money as Liverpool’s inconsistency in front of goal and defensive frailty troubled them badly when Jamie Vardy scored within two minutes into the game following a defensive howler from Joel Matip and Emre Can combined. The Reds had their chances despite Leicester sat deep to protect the lead but failed to convert those into goals. Mohamed Salah missed two glorious opportunities whereas Sadio Mane’s goal was rightly ruled out offside. Harry Maguire and Daniel Amartey delivered a strong defensive display that helped his side to retain the 1-0 lead at half-time.
The Reds started the second-half with more intent and purpose and got their reward soon when Mohamed Salah equalized after his first-half shambles. It was the Egyptian again who outmuscled Harry Maguire with a great turn and finished off into the back of the net to overcome the deficit and put them ahead. It was a nervy final 20 minutes for Liverpool whose defensive frailty could have been exposed against Leicester’s long balls. However, the hosts managed to hold the lead and grabbed a narrow 2-1 win against the former Premier League champions.
