Super Saturday of Premier League game week 21 is going to end with the Old Trafford fixture of Manchester United vs Southampton.
Jose Mourinho will desperately want his team to get back to winning ways after he dropped four points in the last two games. Following a 2-2 draw against Leicester City, the Red Devils ended their home game against Burnley at an identical scoreline in the last game week. Onus will be totally on the home side to get all three points against Southampton, who have been on a bad touch of late.
The Saints have not won a single Premier League match in their last seven outings. The 4-1 thrashing of Everton in gameweek 17 was the last victory for Southampton. Since then, they have gathered only three points from seven games, and conceded as many as 15 goals. Most recently, Harry Kane led Tottenham to get a huge 5-2 win against Mauricio Pellegrino’s men during the last gameweek. All in all, the visitors are in a dire need of some miracle before the new year kicks in.
Manchester United vs Southampton – Team news:
Mourinho is suffering from injury blows for quite a few weeks now. Ahead of the Manchester United vs Southampton game, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick are injured; with Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and Anthony Martial being doubtful as well. The defense has not performed very well in recent games, and the boss will have to rethink his strategies ahead of this match. It might be more helpful to go with a back three for United. Here is our predicted eleven for the hosts.
Southampton, on the other hand, will miss both of their first choice wingbacks – Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares. Charlie Austin will also be out, because of his suspension until 13th January. However, biggest news is certainly the transfer of Virgil Van Dijk. The ever reliable center-back is going to join Liverpool in a few days, and that should cost Southampton dearly. The rest of the team will be available for Pellegrino, and here is our predicted eleven for the visitors.
We think it will be an easy game for the home side and our prediction is a 2-0 win for Manchester United.
Mourinho will have to depend on David De Gea’s brilliant to finish the match with a shutout. Up front, Lukaku has to deliver and he is expected to be ably supported by Rashford and Lingard. The away side will be relying on the likes of Tadic and Gabbiadini to give them the breakthrough. It is worth mention that the latter scored twice in the last League Cup Final when Manchester United defeated Southampton 3-2 to lift the title.
