The entertaining Boxing day clashes piled pressure on Liverpool ahead of their evening outing against bottom-placed Swansea City following the victories of top-four contenders Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. A win against the Swans would have taken them back to ‘top four’ for the time being but the Reds were cautious following their slip up versus Arsenal on Friday night and the shocking home defeat against tonight’s opponents last season made it a crucial outing for both the outfits.
The game, however, proved to be a stroll in the park for Liverpool who thrashed their opponents 5-0 at Anfield.
Liverpool started the game brightly when Philippe Coutinho scored a stellar goal with a stunning strike. The early goal was expected to open the game up and allow the hosts to score a few more, but the Reds seemed to be lethargic and delivered a relatively mundane show for the first 45 minutes. Simon Mignolet, the Reds custodian, had to make a couple of routine stops but the front trio of Liverpool failed to test Fabianski furthermore. Roberto Firmino had a glorious opportunity in closing minutes but failed to keep his strike on target. The first half thus ended 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
But the second half was a stupendous show from the Reds who showed their true colors when Roberto Firmino finished exquisitely from a sublime Coutinho free-kick. Swans failed to stage any sort of comeback and it was young Tren Alexander-Arnold whose thunderous strike took the game beyond any fightback for the visitors. Mohamed Salah couldn’t find the net but assisted Firmino for his second before both being taken off ahead of Leicester City outing. The show, however, was not over yet and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined the party with a stunning finish to make it 5-0 for the hosts. Mignolet made a quality stop right at the very end to deny Tammy Abraham and kept a clean-sheet following his horror show against Arsenal.
The win takes Liverpool to the fourth spot for another gameweek and the confidence will be high when they will host the Foxes on Saturday afternoon.
